Your Guide to a Safe and Fun Ride
Your top priority on vacation is having fun, and our top priority is making sure you do it safely. Gliding through Coronado on a Segway is an incredible experience, and it’s natural to have a few questions before you hop on. We want you to feel completely comfortable and confident from the moment you arrive. That’s why every tour is designed with your safety and enjoyment in mind. From getting you geared up to teaching you the ropes, our guides are there to support you. This guide covers everything you need to know about age requirements, pre-tour prep, and what to expect, so you can focus on soaking in the stunning views and making amazing memories.
Age and Weight Requirements
Before you book, let’s go over the basics. To ride a Segway, you need to be at least 10 years old. If you have younger teens, from ages 10 to 15, a parent or guardian will need to sign a waiver and join them on the tour for the ride. For older teens who are 16 or 17, a parent or guardian just needs to sign the waiver, and they’re free to ride on their own with the group. These rules are in place to make sure everyone has a secure and enjoyable time exploring the island together.
Get Comfortable with a Pre-Tour Lesson
Never been on a Segway before? No problem at all. We start every tour with a 30-minute training session to get you acquainted with your ride. Your guide will walk you through everything, from how to step on and off to steering and stopping smoothly. This isn’t a boring lecture—it’s a fun, hands-on lesson in a safe, open space. The goal is to make sure you feel totally in control and confident before we even hit the streets. By the time the lesson is over, you’ll be gliding like a pro and ready to explore Coronado.
A Note on Weather
One of the best things about San Diego is the beautiful weather, but sometimes a little rain can roll in. Don’t let that stop you! Our Segway tours run rain or shine, so you can enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous scenery no matter what the forecast says. We just recommend checking the weather beforehand and dressing in layers. A light jacket can make all the difference. A little coastal mist can even add to the magical atmosphere of Coronado Island, giving you a unique story to tell when you get back home.
Your Safety Gear
Your safety is our number one concern, which is why we provide all the necessary gear for your ride. This includes a properly fitted helmet for every single rider. During your pre-tour lesson, your guide will not only teach you how to operate the Segway but will also cover all the safety protocols for riding in a group and sharing the path with others. We handle all the details so you can relax, have fun, and focus on the incredible sights around you. Just show up ready for an adventure, and we’ll take care of the rest.
Perfect for First-Time Riders
If you’re feeling a little nervous about trying a Segway for the first time, you are not alone. But trust us, you’ll get the hang of it in no time! Our guides are experts at teaching beginners and creating a supportive, pressure-free environment. As one first-time rider shared, “I had some apprehension and anxiety about controlling a Segway. My guide Preston and the owner Kenny were absolutely fantastic.” Our Coronado Segway tours are designed to be fun and accessible for everyone, regardless of experience. We’re here to cheer you on and make sure you have an amazing and comfortable ride.
Hear the Stories Behind the Sights
A trip to Coronado Island is a feast for the eyes, but the real magic happens when you learn the stories behind the stunning scenery. Gliding through the streets on a Segway isn’t just about seeing the sights; it’s about hearing the whispers of history, the tales of famous residents, and the local legends that give this island its unique character. A guided tour transforms a simple visit into a rich, narrative experience. Your guide is more than just a navigator—they’re a storyteller, connecting you to the extraordinary backstories that make Coronado so captivating. From its deep military roots to its glamorous Hollywood past, you’ll uncover the layers of history that lie just beneath the surface of this beautiful island paradise.
Coronado’s Rich Military History
Coronado has a long and proud connection to the U.S. military, and you’ll feel that presence as you explore. The island is home to Naval Base Coronado, a massive and vital hub for the Navy’s Pacific fleet. On your tour, you’ll get incredible views of impressive military ships and learn about the base’s strategic importance throughout history. Your guide will share fascinating details about the elite Navy SEALs who train here and the role the island has played in national defense. It’s a powerful reminder of the history and service that are woven into the fabric of the community, offering a perspective you simply can’t get from a guidebook.
The Island’s Unique Architecture
Prepare to be captivated by Coronado’s stunning and diverse architecture. The undisputed star of the show is the legendary Hotel del Coronado, a magnificent example of Victorian seaside resort design. As you cruise by, you’ll hear stories about its construction in 1888 and the countless celebrities and dignitaries who have stayed within its iconic red-roofed walls. But the architectural tour doesn’t stop there. The island is a beautiful mosaic of styles, from charming Craftsman bungalows to elegant Mediterranean Revival homes. Each building has a story, and our Coronado Segway Tour brings that history to life.
Stories of Famous Residents
Coronado has long been a haven for fascinating people, and their stories are some of the best parts of the tour. Your guide will share tales of the many famous residents who have called the island home, from Hollywood movie stars and celebrated authors to influential military leaders. You’ll hear personal anecdotes about the people who shaped the island’s culture and left their mark on its history. These stories provide a personal glimpse into the lives lived behind the beautiful facades, making you feel more connected to the community and its vibrant past. It’s like getting an inside scoop on the island’s most interesting secrets.
Local Legends and Lore
Every historic place has a few ghost stories, and Coronado is no exception. The island is steeped in intriguing local legends and lore that add a touch of mystery to your adventure. The most famous tales swirl around the Hotel del Coronado, which is said to be home to a friendly ghost named Kate Morgan. Your guide will recount the spooky details and other captivating local myths, from rumored shipwrecks to whispers of hidden treasure. These entertaining stories are woven seamlessly into the tour, offering a fun and sometimes chilling look into the island’s more mysterious side.
Coronado’s Cultural Impact
Beyond its beaches and buildings, Coronado has had a significant cultural impact that has resonated for decades. The island’s breathtaking landscapes and idyllic lifestyle have served as a source of inspiration for countless artists, writers, and filmmakers. During your tour, you’ll learn how Coronado has been featured in famous movies and how its unique charm has influenced various forms of art and media. This context helps you appreciate the island not just as a beautiful destination but as a cultural touchstone in Southern California. For those wanting a more tailored experience, a private tour can dive even deeper into these creative histories.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or coordinating a whole crew, these tips will help you iron out the logistics. Let’s get you ready for an incredible adventure exploring the beautiful sights and stories of Coronado Island.
What to Wear and Bring
Comfort is key when you’re spending a couple of hours on a Segway. I always recommend wearing comfortable, closed-toe shoes—think sneakers or flats. You’ll be standing for the duration of the tour, so happy feet are a must. Dress in layers, as San Diego weather can change throughout the day. A t-shirt with a zip-up hoodie or a light jacket is usually a safe bet.
If you’re touring on a cooler day, especially in the morning or evening, you might want to bring a pair of light gloves and a beanie to stay cozy. The breeze can feel a bit chilly when you’re cruising along the coast. Other than that, just bring your sense of adventure! We’ll handle the helmets and Segway training.
The Best Time of Year for a Tour
The great news is that San Diego’s weather is fantastic year-round, making any time a good time for a Coronado Segway tour. We run tours daily, with hourly time slots available upon request. This flexibility makes it easy to fit the experience into your vacation schedule, whether you’re an early bird who wants to see the island wake up or you prefer a sunny afternoon ride.
Because you can book a tour any day of the week, you can plan your visit around your own itinerary. Summer offers classic sunny California days, while the fall and spring bring pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Even winter is mild and beautiful here. Simply pick the day and time that works best for you and get ready to roll.
